Luther Analysis - Ethnicity

In the clip you could see that it was located in a factory with 2 characters, one white male and one black male. However, the white male is wearing a suit which could show him as being the manager or boss there and then having a black working male who is dressed in casual working clothes. This is representing authority and power over the work place. You can see they are having conflict which could be about working. Conflict between 2 males of different ethnicity could be re-enforcing the stereotype but in a negative way as it shows it as not being equal. The lighting is shown to be quite dark which could lead to dark symbolizing death or a threat between the two races.
The use of close ups and low angles can reenforce the conflict that the 2 characters are having. The low angle on the black male can show he has more power but this can challenge the stereotype of white people having more power over black people. This is having a negative impact on the way we see other peoples ethnicity.
With how it's edited together being quite fast paced it's showing how there is a conflicted battle that is happening between the 2 characters. Although we've said the black male has more power due to the low angles on him, the white male in the clip has more prominence towards the other character meaning that they can have an equal amount of power but at different parts. This can be argued he has more power. Having the white male having more prominence towards the black male can reenforce a negative racial stereotype.
The establishing sound used was intimidating music for the victim. The music enhanced the climax which meant that something negative was going to happen, which was Henry almost falling to his death. This represents the stereotype of Henry the victim being innocent and pitied. This is seen as a negative stereotype by having a powerful, educated male, hanging on for his life while the black male is standing over him with more power.

Conflict is how TV Dramas are made, they are revolved around something happening between 2 or more characters to try and create entertainment for the audience. Ethnicity as conflict is recognised by emphasising the opposition/differences of the ethnics values, (racist), cultural and stereotypes to the values to that of the wider society.

Disability Essay

Edit

When the clip starts its starts off as a slow zooming clip where it fades into the light, this gives it a smooth and calming feel. It also shows a contradiction to the youth, as we don’t associate them as being slow, calm, we think that this clip would be fast and quick transaction between them but having it like this can tell us that maybe the youth in this clip are seen more as slow due to David having to look after his brother is slow. There’s the use of juxtaposition as it goes from the man then to evolution that could show how some have failed in a way with the evolution scale, it shows how far Ben has come, he acts as a little bit of a caveman. All of this is giving a negative impact on people who have a disability by showing the sides that they can't do things for themselves, but it is giving a negative re-enforcement. David has a lot more prominence than Ben showing that he has more power over him and how he doesn't have the control and power of his disability.

Camera

The high angle at the beginning of the clip shows that one side of the room is untidy and messy which can relate to Ben's mind as he has a disability. And on the other side of the room theres David’s area all clear and organised which suggests that he is thinking straight.  The camera then rotates around David with a close up that shows that he thinks the world revolves around him.  At the table where they are eating breakfast  they use a shot reverse shot to show that there is conflict between the two brothers.  After school Ben is always in the background when David is talking to his mate which means that he does not have as much power as others because of his disability. Also the younger brother takes up a lot more room in the shots which could demonstrate that he is a bigger problem and more important as he has to be looked after this reinforces the victim stereotype as he is very vulnerable and incapable of doing things for himself.

Mise en scene

When the high angle in the bedroom is seen, you can see both beds divided with a strict line where the clash of styles from the brothers individual sides happen, this could be a sign of conflict between them as their sides differ in great amount from the other.
Ben’s side of the room is very messy and clustered; this could be a portrayal of his mind and personality. David’s side of the room is kept tidy, this shows that he is organised, this is also a portrayal of their maturity, as children tend to be messier as adults are tidier.
Ben can also be seen playing with children’s toys that indicate that he has the mental level of a child, which is abnormal, and David is of the proper mental age. Ben would be seen more as a victim in this clip as he is not able to do such things.

Class - Downton Abbey Clip

Camera

We see what building they live in when an establishing shot shows a building that dominates the scene, and domination is how the upper class is shown to the servants. When the too Lady's are speaking and the maid walks in, she greets them by giving an herself orders, she knows that she has something to do and she knows that if she doesn't do it then she isn't doing her job. When she walks on the camera moves to a close up of her face which you can see is showing the angry that she has due to her not having the respect that she deserves. The Lord is in the front room, which is much larger than any other normal one to them, but to the upper and more powerful of people, this is how they live and this is what under and working class people demise. The maid walks in and when she greets the Lord he corrects her speech as saying that he has more eduction and I am always right, and because they are just servants then they have to go along with that. As the Lord is relaxed and leaning back in the chair, the maid is showing respect and standing to up to him, the camera is then looking up are he which now shows that she has more power at this moment because she knows something that he doesn't and he wants to listen.
