Social Class and Region

Four Stereotypes of Social Class:

  • Upper Class
  • Middle Class 
  • Working Class
  • Underclass
Upper Class
  • Top of the social and economic hierarchy
  • High eduction and at the high end of there occupation 
 Middle Class
  • There are between the upper and lower end of the social economy 
  • The family is strong and the parents have good jobs earning decent money
  • The children are the ones to humour the adults because they are hard working 
  • Typically the man is seen as manly and the woman as womanly 
  • Families are seen as functional and and strong 
Working Class
  • Seen as positive or negative
  • Hard working who get little in return
  • Low wages 
  • Basic eduction 
  • Stereotypes that come to mind are lazy and unproductive 
  • Males are seen as incompetent, good intentions meant but are dumb
  • Also fails in the role of a man, husband and father
Underclass
  • Chav 
  • Benefits 
  • Unemployed
  • Violent
  • Drug and alcohol effected 
  • Broken family
  • The media have shown that the dominant class would be the middle class.

- Loyal and community - Middle 
- Natural, honest and down to earth - Middle 
- Comfortable - Middle 
- Pretentious - Upper
- Austere and stiff upper lip - Upper
- Sophisticated & well bred - Upper
- Violent and criminal - Underclass
- Dirty and uncouth - Underclass
- Boring and sheltered - Underclass

Descriptive Words

Upper - Highly educated, rich, posh, snob, wise
Middle - Good lifestyle, enough money to survive on, strong family
Working - Hard working, basic education, lazy, breaking family 
Underclass - Chav, benefits, violent, broken family

Main Stereotypes of Youth, Adults and Elderly -

Rebellious/Threat oppose to Traditional/Vulnerable
Fetishises - Virility, Beauty, Carefree
Responsible/Authority
Immature/Extended Adolescent



















Sound -

  • Youth = loud and aggressive 
  • Elder = quite 

MES Stereotypes -

  • Youth = hoodies, criminal, emotionally unstable, beauty, sexual
  • Elder = fragile, vulnerable, alone, ill, ugly, non-sexual

Camera -

  • Youth = handheld, C.U (there intense and dramatic)
  • Elder = slow moving, tripod, L.S (shows loneliness and isolation)

Edit -

  • Youth = fast pace, frenetic, quick transactions 
  • Elder = slow, dissolve transaction, tradition shooting
